A New Name for a New Life: Merdokiyos’ Story
And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.” And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:17-18 ESV)
Thanks to your generous support, Merdokiyos, a 19-year-old student from Ethiopia, has found hope and a brighter future. Blind since the age of two due to an untreated eye infection, Merdokiyos faced immense challenges. Shunned by his community and denied essential healthcare, his birth name, Paul, became a symbol of rejection and isolation. But your contributions have changed his story.
At age 13, after years of trying and failing to attend school without support, Merdokiyos found a glimmer of hope. Through your generosity and Christian Horizons Ethiopia, he was enrolled in an inclusive education school in Asella that includes students with disabilities. Despite the 15-kilometer trek from his home, he pressed on, fuelled by an unwavering dream: to become a journalist.
Merdokiyos was given a Braille stylus for his studies and was relocated to live closer to his school - thanks to your donations!
His transformation was profound. No longer seen as a curse but as a gifted person with a bright future, he chose a new name—Merdokiyos, Ethiopian for Mordecai from the book of Esther—symbolizing hope and renewal.
Merdokiyos’ journey from despair to hope is a testament to the power of accessible education, community support, and his determination to share his gifts with the people around him. His story also beautifully illustrates how the Church, as God’s people, lays a solid foundation and creates opportunities for all people to share their gifts and belong.
Because of you, Merdokiyos has not only found his place but also embraced his role in shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
