How Technology Helps Corey Live Independently
At the end of 2023, Corey's life took a significant turn. With the loss of his grandmother and his mother moving to long-term care, Corey needed a new place to live. He likes living independently and that is exactly what he set out to do with Karis Disability Services supporting him.
The future is very bright when we are open to new tools that can help us accomplish what we want to accomplish.
At first, Karis provided Corey with weekly check-ins, but after a while, Corey told us that he need more support keeping up his routine, with reminders to clean, cook, and get his morning started. Through Karis's services, Corey moved into his very own apartment - an apartment equipped with some cool assistive technologies to help him live on his own.
With voice commands, Alexa, Amazon's virtual assistant, can help Corey with his day-to-day activities - from turning on the lights, opening his blinds, starting his favourite video games, and operating his smart vacuum. Corey is a tech-savvy young man and he will excitedly tell you about Just Dance, and Grand Theft Auto, his favourite video games.
Through the self-direction of his services, Corey can live on his own in a way that works for him. Corey likes to spend a lot of his time at The Link, a Karis Disability Services Community Participation Supports centre where people can learn new things, play games, attend dances, and hang out with friends.
Corey loves Dua Lipa, his cat named Jennifer, and WWE wrestling.
