Different Kinds of Service: Judy's Story
In 1983, fresh from university with a psychology degree and no clear career path, Judy stepped into a new and unfamiliar world—supporting individuals with developmental disabilities at Karis Disability Services' (then Christian Horizons’) very first group home in Waterloo. What started as "just a job" quickly became something more—a calling, a place where she discovered her gift for connection, patience, and presence.
At Mary Street House, life was full and busy. Days began with shared breakfasts and van rides to the Kinsmen Centre, followed by quiet hours spent completing paperwork and planning support goals. Afternoons brought the hum of community life—cooking lessons, evening meals shared around a long table, laughter, conflict, and growth. Judy learned that in small, everyday moments—teaching a recipe, sitting quietly in the living room, folding laundry side-by-side—people revealed their gifts.
After stepping away to raise her children, Judy returned to Karis Disability Services in 2008, this time in finance. The shift from front-line support to managing donor records and sponsorships was vast, but the heart of the work remained the same: supporting people through service. She was surprised to be hired into a finance role without a background in numbers—but someone saw potential, just as she had done for others, decades earlier.

Now retiring, she reflects on her journey with humility and gratitude. Her story is one of quiet impact—of celebrating people, showing up, and making space for others to shine. It’s a legacy that reminds us: every role matters, and every gift has a place.
As we Celebrate Every Journey this anniversary year, we are grateful to the many employees, past and present, who have dedicated their time, supporting people with disabilities to thrive in communities where everybody belongs!
