Accessible Classrooms Give Families Hope: Sofia's Story

"I thank God that Teacher Karla said yes to teaching Sofia," Isabel said. "With the support that Teacher Karla has given us, our girl is making so much progress."

In the mountains of Guatemala, amidst the lush landscapes and vibrant culture, sits Ascuela Aldea Rural, a school that partners with Karis Disability Services. When Karis partners with an overseas school, we are focused on establishing accessible classrooms and curricula so children with disabilities can learn alongside their peers.

Teacher Karla is the accessible education teacher at the Ascuela Aldea Rural and there, she teaches Sofia, and equips Sofia's guardian, her aunt, Isabel, so she can continue learning at home. Sofia has a complex disability that impacts her walking and movement. She used to attend a physiotherapy program outside her village, but when it became unaffordable, Isabel felt hopeless.

With Teacher Karla's guidance, Sofia is learning in a classroom and at home, while also receiving physical therapy. Despite the obstacles she faced, Sofia's determination never wavered.

I felt so proud of Sofia. When she was born, doctors said there was no hope that our girl would life. But I always saw that Sofia was fighting for her life to keep moving forward.

From learning to move her hands to taking her first steps, Sofia's progress is a testament to the power of perseverance, belief, and continued access to disability services and accessible spaces.
