What is the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB)?
Who qualifies for the Canada Disability Benefit?
To be eligible for the CDB, you must:
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a temporary resident living in Canada for at least 18 months
Be 18 to 64 years old
Have filed your 2024 taxes
Have an approved Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
Why is the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) important for the CDB?
You must have the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) to receive Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) payments. Applying for the Disability Tax Credit Certificate (Form T2201) is the first step to qualifying for the CDB.
How do I apply for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?
Download Form T2201 (Disability Tax Credit Certificate) from the CRA website
Fill out Part A with your personal details
Have a doctor or health professional complete Part B describing how your disability affects daily life
Submit the form to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
Wait for CRA approval (processing takes about 8 weeks)
How do I apply for the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB)?
The CRA will handle CDB applications. More details will be available closer to the July 2025 launch. Stay updated through the Government of Canada's CDB page.
Will the CDB affect provincial disability supports (ODSP, SAID)?
The Saskatchewan government confirms the CDB won’t impact Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID).
The Ontario government has stated that the CDB will not be deducted from Ontario Works or ACSD payments.
The Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) announced on May 27 that ODSP will not be impacted by the CDB.
