New name.
Same values.

We’ve changed our name from Christian Horizons to Karis Disability Services. Why?

Our name should reflect our values. While Christian Horizons served us well, our new name helps people know that they can belong - people looking for services, for employment, or to partner with us.

As the landscape of developmental services evolves in Canada, and people with disabilities increasingly shape their own journeys, we welcome everybody who chooses our services to find the supports that are right for them. Our name might be new, but our commitment to our faith roots, values, vision and mission continues.

What you might wonder

At its core, the word “Karis” embodies our Christian spirit of service. It’s a reflection of our commitment, fueled by God’s grace, recognizing the value and gifts of every person. “Disability Services” isn’t just what we do—it’s a declaration. We embrace the word “disability” as an important aspect of human diversity. Using the word “disability” is the preferred language of our disability community. We celebrate the people we journey with and their unique identities and gifts.

From Greek χάρις, 'Karis' represents God's grace and gifts. It's our belief that everyone is made in the image of God and has valued gifts to celebrate. By sharing their gifts, each person enriches their community, making it whole. At Karis Disability Services, we champion this spirit, cultivating spaces where everybody's gifts are celebrated.

In 2021, we started on a journey to see how our brand positions us for the future. We tapped into:

  • Feedback from over 1,000 surveys and nine focus group sessions.

  • Insights from those who knew Christian Horizons inside-out: people with disabilities, their families, our staff, and our generous donors.

  • Conversations with faith leaders, officials, and peer organizations.

Recurring feedback? Our name didn’t quite capture the essence of our mission. Some even questioned if they truly belonged with us. Guided by these findings, we began a renaming journey:

  • Intensive 2-day branding sessions sculpted our brand's character.

  • Rigorous brainstorming led to potential names, backed by theological and legal checks.

  • After much deliberation, "Karis Disability Services" shone the brightest, receiving a unanimous nod from our leadership and board.

Over the next year, you will see our new name and look begin to appear across all of our materials and services. We're taking this step by step, toward a smooth transition for everyone involved.

We are excited about what is ahead for the future of disability services. We look forward to how our new name will help build our vision of belonging.

As we navigate this new chapter, your unwavering support means the world to us.
